The International Surface Ocean – Lower Atmosphere Study (SOLAS) project is a CORE project within IGBP, search which is a programme that will be transferred and incorporated into the global research platform Future Earth after its closure end of 2015.

SOLAS has an International Project Office in Kiel, Germany, a volunteer SOLAS science committee and SOLAS Networks in nearly 30 countries.

SOLAS mission

SOLAS aims to understand the key biogeochemical-physical interactions and feedbacks between the ocean and atmosphere.

SOLAS research fields

There are currently over 2500 scientists from all over the world in the SOLAS mailing list, contributing their knowledge from many disciplines, such as

  • oceanography
  • ecology
  • biogeochemistry
  • physics
  • chemistry
  • atmospheric sciences

to SOLAS studies. You can read more about SOLAS studies in the article Evolving research directions in Surface Ocean–Lower Atmosphere (SOLAS) science published in Environmental Chemistry (see attachment).

How to get involved in SOLAS in Sweden

As a member of SOLAS, you will get regular updates about activities within the network and get invited to meetings and workshops arranged by the Swedish SOLAS network.

Since 2013, SSEESS has been supporting the Swedish SOLAS Network as their interim secretariat. The Swedish SOLAS Network is led by a committee consisting of:

If you are researcher in Sweden and like to become a member or get engaged with the Swedish SOLAS Network, you are very welcome to contact our Research Officer Kim von Hackwitz, or any of the members of the Swedish SOLAS committee.
